1930-1950 Post WW1 Fabrics
Pastels were the rage of this era.

Margo Krager, our fearless leader, has spent over 20 years researching historic cotton printed and yarn-dyed fabrics used in quilts and garments, gives lectures on historic dye and print technologies. So when you visit our shop or spend some time on our website you will get lots of great historical fabric information along with your quilting and costuming needs! Margo LOVES to research and share history about cotton printed and woven fabrics used in quilts and garments.
I have been asked many times how I date my reproduction fabrics. We spend an enormous amount of time researching fabrics used in quilts and garments. This includes extensive library research on textiles, print and dye technology development, visiting museums all over the US, and viewing private and public textile collections. Margo is currently doing research in economic history with emphasis on the cotton textile industry.
Knowing all this, we shop the fabric markets and select fabrics that we think were typical of certain time periods. That is why sometimes on the my site you see an entire section for a line and I also include a “Margo’s Finds” section with the individual reproduction fabrics I buy.
In my next newsletters I’m going to highlight a specific time period and some of the wonderful lines we have for that time period. I’m starting with the Post WW1 Era 1930-1950 in this letter. I really hope you enjoy, reach out with any questions.
1930-1950: Depression Era, WW2 and Post WW1
Pastels were the rage of this era. Post WWI American textile chemists began to print those wonderful pastels! The women loved the clear taffy pinks, Dresden blues and lavenders. Early in the century...there was a selection of mid tone pastel solids available with just a few prints. Germany had to give up their textile dye formulas as part of War Reparations following WWI. American textile chemists used them to give us a wide selection of pastel prints. First feed sack printed in 1937 by Percy Kent Company.

Recently a customer gave me a 1940s top. It is a wonderful 'library' of 1940s fabrics! A few days later a sales rep came in with this new Nana Mae line. I instantly recognized it...sure enough it is exactly like the fabric in the top. The pink is a bit brighter. I have 4 fabric lines from Nana Mae, aren’t they wonderful!
